Ouzai

Ouzai or Ouzville is located in the southern suburbs of Beirut. A known Hezbollah stronghold, it has endured its share of misery over the decades.

A few years ago, a local businessman, Ayad Nasser had artists flown in from around the world, to reinvigorate the area and buildings.

The result is a hard-up local population, paranoid of Israeli incursion and airstrike, set against an incongruous backdrop of pop colour and deft hand.

Architecture of War

This was a project commissioned by BBC World Service, to look closely at the scarred buildings of Beirut and the intimate stories behind them.

I shot both still and moving image for this project, which subsequently aired on TV earlier this year.

Ahmed's Place

Ahmed searches through the ruins of a family apartment promised to him in 1975. Only months later it was used by both Muslim and Christian fighters during the Lebanese Civil War.

Completely destroyed by decades of terrible violence, the echoes of explosions and gunfire still haunt those old enough to remember - and even after 29 years of relative peace, this architecture of war lies ruined as an unforgiving reminder to Ahmed and others of their dreams lost, inexorably.
